Set to take place at Spain’s Galería Javier López & Fer Francés gallery, contemporary artists from New York City, Todd James, returns with a colorful dozen of suggestive paintings as part of an upcoming exhibition titled The Intrepid. The show follows his Copenhagen’s Eighteen Gallery exhibition Warm Welcome.

The Intrepid features vivid new compositions and surrealist still lifes that recall Matissian interiors and idyllic landscapes with James’ sinister and suggestive twist. The paintings reference everyday modern life in the Western World as well as go over “countries that the USA influences politically and culturally, as they share in the same consumer-society dilemmas,” as per the gallery’s statement. “Lascivious women surrounded by weapons, accompanied by skeletons and skulls, or with their usual cats, are depicted from the viewpoint of a voyeur with whom we may identify. Through them, he offers a Pop-Art flavored interpretation of the vital and antagonistic impulses of Eros and Thanatos.”

There is an ongoing battle of love versus death in his works, as some of the paintings feature a colorful skull figure hovering over a female subject who appears to be asleep—the skull represents death while the female subject symbolizes love.
